Affordable Gifts

Yes, we know. . .you think of "Antiques" & "Estate Jewelry" and see dollar signs! Of course, there are some occasions and events in your life where a splurge is necessary; however, the majority of the time you want to pick up a gift that looks like you spent a lot without actually breaking the bank. We have the solution for you here at Mellow's!
Our La Vie Parisienne fashion jewelry line from Paris, France looks like it cost you a bundle, while price points start at just $28! AND we do layaway on items of any price--30% down and 3 months to pay--What a deal!
Here at Mellow Antiques, we have carried La Vie Parisienne for over 15 years and we are the only boutique in Honolulu that carries this line. Exclusive...check! Affordable....check!  Stylish. . .but of course!

La Vie jewelry is made from antique French jewelry molds from the 1920s and 1930s. The antiqued metal is a copper base with either 14k yellow gold or sterling silver overlay and only genuine Swarovski Austrian Crystals are used. The earrings are fashioned with a French wire, which makes for easy wear and sophisticated style, and the necklaces generally adjust to two different lengths--such versatility!

If you haven't already experienced (and become addicted to) La Vie jewelry--you're missing out! Come in today to peruse the collection and ask us about the La VIP card--a collector's card that helps you save, save, save!
And while you are here, take a look around the shop at our one-of-a-kind antique and estate pieces--it's like being in a museum with free entry!
 Happy shopping,
--the gals at Mellow's

Vintage vs. Antique

So often we hear the terms vintage and antique thrown around so loosely that one becomes confused as to the meaning behind the words. In fashion we hear, "oh, it's vintage" to pretty much describe anything that is either without a designer's label or from an unknown time period. In the world of wine we hear the word vintage referring to a year and/or origin of the wine. In jewelry, however, there is a distinct difference in the terms.

Vintage refers to anything that is 20 years or older, whereas an antique technically must be at least 100 years old. True antiques are harder to find these days, while vintage seems to be plentiful! The fashion magazines have used, and misused, the word vintage to the point that we sometimes don't even take it seriously--So, you're saying my old, beat up Smurfette t-shirt from when I was a kid is vintage? (um, okay. . .sure!)

We adore true antiques at our shop. We have some lovely pieces that date back to the Victorian Era, as well as originals from 'Old Hawaii', which were used in the recent Princess Kaiulani Movie. Antique shopping can become addicting and we have some clients who can vouch for that. The intricacy of the workmanship from these past eras, at a time before we booted the human touch from the workshop and replaced it with machines, is truly incredible. Filigree designs, hand-cut diamonds, and natural pearls add a unique touch to the antique jewelry.

Amongst our vintage pieces you'll find fun chandelier earrings and 'liquid silver' necklaces, circa 1970s; and--our favorite--Italian Lucite Jewelry, circa 1980s. We love it all and we have something for everyone! So now that you have a better grasp on vintage vs. antique, perhaps you'll impress your friends with such trivia and become a savvy shopper!

Happy Hunting!

Our First Blog Post!

I suppose we have an excuse for being such a 'late bloomer' in the blogging world. . . Much like what our shop offers, our practices are also, for the most part, 'antique'. We open our shop door with an actual key, we hand write our sales receipts, and we often run into our clients at the local grocery store! We have, however, established ourselves recently on Facebook , Twitter, and now have our own blog. So, at least our intentions are good, even if we are amongst the 'late adapters'.

Our hope is that this blog becomes a way for our current clients and friends to keep up with the happenings of our shop and the ever entertaining and interesting topics surrounding antique and estate jewelry and collectibles.  We invite you to comment and share your experiences and questions. We would adore your decision to become our 'follower', and we encourage you to share our blog with your friends and family.

In an era in which monetary value has become increasingly more important to people than historical value, we are finding less availability of true antique jewelry ('antique' referring to 100 years old or more).  Yet, there are those of us who still enjoy the story of a true antique--or the story that one can imagine it would tell. . .

Jewelry has so many facets, and at Mellow Antiques we enjoy touching upon each one of them in order to bring our clients closer to their dreams. Mahalo for helping us come closer to ours. We hope you enjoy blogging with us!
